Music Notes September 2011 Many thanks to all who participated in one or more of the special musical ensembles we’ve enjoyed this summer. It was great seeing some new faces up front and enjoying God’s good gifts He’s given to His people.
Labor Day to a church musician means: only 103 days left till the Christmas program! I had hoped that listening to Christmas music all summer would help with the heat and humidity, but it didn’t. It did give me some ideas for what to do at Christmas—the time of the year when “tradition” often wins out over “new”. The vast majority of what I have listened to have been “new” versions of “old” carols. The challenge is how to be creative without leaving out any of those old favorites! Here at Aveleigh, our Christmas music ministry program will be Sunday, December 18 at 11. We’ll be celebrating the Incarnation with a mixture of old and new songs of the season. Mark your calendars now since I hope you won’t want to miss it! And if you would like to be a part of it, watch the bulletin for an announcement about when Christmas rehearsals will begin. Of course, if you’d like to get in the swing of things earlier, our regular rehearsals are beginning now! Here are some ways you can get involved:
Praise Team (leads the 8:30 service) meets periodically on Wednesday evenings, occasionally on Saturday mornings, and at 7:45 on Sunday morning. We can use singers, musicians, sound crew and PowerPoint folks. Regular rehearsals begin August 31.
Sanctuary Choir (leads the 11 service) meets from 7:30 – 8:30 on Wednesday evenings and at 10:45 on Sunday morning. We can also use sound crew and PowerPoint folks for that service. (We provide all the training you will need.) Regular rehearsals begin August 17.
Hand Bell Choir (yes, hand bells! More on that later but rejoice with us in a gift of 3 octaves of hand bells!) We meet on Saturday mornings at 10 but are open to changing that to suit those who want to participate. This group is open to anyone 15 or over. You don’t need to have experienced ringing bells before—we’ll help you get going, but it does help if you can count to at least 4 and read a little music.
Young Musicians (grades 1 – 6) meets during Book-a-Week on Wednesday afternoons beginning September 28 and includes singing, rhythm, chimes/bells, and various musical activities. Watch for more information in September.
In the “don’t hide your light under a bushel” category: if you play an instrument or want to help out in any other way, please let me know. We like to use other instruments periodically, but we can’t if we don’t know you play!
And in the other opportunities list: The Newberry Community Choir meets on Monday evenings from 7 – about 8:30 at Summer Memorial Lutheran Church beginning in mid-August (but it’s not too late to join). Folks from a number of local churches (including several from Aveleigh) participate in this choir which presents programs for Christmas (the weekend after Thanksgiving) and Easter (the weekend before Palm Sunday). For more information see Ginny and Brian Holt or Tom and Donna Perry.
